Diffusion/Illusion Collection

We partnered with the cross-disciplinary Parisian studio Études in 2020 for their Spring/Summer ready-to-wear collection – the most surprising fashion collaboration of the season[1]. The collection’s “Diffusion/Illusion” theme explored the borderless impact Études strives for in fashion[2], complementing how a borderless world would ensure Wikipedia content can be freely accessed globally. Recognising the harmony between Études’ approach to connecting many different media[3] and how Wikipedia connects different categories of knowledge within a vast resource, we were thrilled to present Wikipedia content to readers in this unexpected format. Études’ modernist approach to all-over-prints of Wikipedia’s ‘diffusion’ and ‘illusion’ articles, the definition of the word Études (from the French for study), and a simplified version of the Wikipedia puzzle globe logo[4] were central to their standout collection on the runway at Paris Fashion Week[5]. Proceeds from sales of the shirts, hoodies, t-shirts, shorts and caps[6] were donated to the Wikimedia Foundation to support free knowledge worldwide.

Tha Carter V T-shirt

To celebrate the 2018 release of American rapper Lil Wayne’s record-breaking[1] album “Tha Carter V”, our second collaboration with the digitally-influenced[2] Los Angeles streetwear brand Advisory Board Crystals was on a t-shirt inspired by the experience of going down a Wiki rabbit hole. Merging collaged artwork[1], stats, accolades[3] and doodled imagery[1], with a nod to Lil Wayne’s infamous exclamation “Wiki Me Bish!” from the album’s announcement video, the design used screen-printed graphics in a visual representation of the rapper’s Wikipedia page[4]. A bona fide brand highlight, the collaboration artfully demonstrated how Wikipedia is ingrained into the pop culture ether.

Internet Master T-shirt

The first of two unexpected collaborations between Los Angeles-based experimental streetwear label Advisory Board Crystals and Wikipedia, the limited-edition Internet Master t-shirt launched in 2018 to celebrate the digital age and Wikipedia’s role as the world’s largest free source of information. The bold, red retro font[1] used for “Internet Master” surrounds the iconic Wikipedia puzzle globe, to salute Wikipedia’s volunteer contributors and their mastery of high-quality, freely accessible online knowledge.

Staying true to their ethos, Advisory Board Crystals’ minimal design pays homage to a recontextualized 1-of-1 classic (as seen on Frank Ocean) and serves as a physical expression[2] of the cultural significance and social impact of free knowledge. 100% of the proceeds[3] from each sale at New York City boutique Patron of the New[4] were donated to the Wikimedia Foundation, highlighting a shared commitment to (looking cool[5] whilst) preserving free and open knowledge for humankind.
